Lignite Energy Council Recognizes Tom Erickson for Outstanding Contributions to Research and Development

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Lignite Energy Council awarded Tom Erickson, the University of North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center’s Chief Operating Officer and Vice President for Intellectual Property, with the 2024 Distinguished Service Award for Research and Development. This honor was presented at the Council’s annual meeting held on October 3 at the Bismarck Event Center, where industry leaders gathered to celebrate advancements and achievements in lignite energy.

Erickson, a dedicated member of the lignite research and development community for over three decades, has made significant strides in advancing technologies that benefit the lignite industry. Since graduating from the University of North Dakota, Erickson has played a crucial role in numerous research and development projects, dedicating his career to identifying and nurturing technological solutions that support the lignite industry’s sustainability and growth.

Most recently, Erickson has brought his expertise to the North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center, where he focuses on projects that translate early-stage concepts into practical technologies for the lignite research program. His efforts ensure that innovative solutions are consistently explored to keep the lignite industry viable and progressive.

“Tom Erickson has been a driving force in our research and development efforts, especially through his leadership at the State Energy Research Center. His work continually propels our industry forward, making it more resilient and innovative,” said Jason Bohrer, President and CEO of the Lignite Energy Council. “His commitment to exploring groundbreaking solutions has a lasting impact, and we are grateful for his dedication to the future of lignite.”

The Distinguished Service Award for Research and Development is one of several awards presented by the Lignite Energy Council each year to recognize exceptional contributions to the industry. The Council remains committed to advancing technologies and practices that strengthen the lignite industry, and Erickson’s work exemplifies this mission.
