An expansive seismic survey is currently underway in McLean County, spanning an impressive 232 square miles. This geophysical endeavor aims to unlock the secrets of the subsurface rock layers more than a mile below ground. This seismic survey, conducted in partnership with Rainbow Energy Center and Paragon Geophysical Services, Inc., is more than just a technical undertaking. The data collected will enable researchers to build accurate models of subsurface formations, evaluate the suitability of rock layers for CO2 storage, and guide decisions on injection and monitoring well placements. The findings will also help permitting authorities determine whether the proposed geologic storage project can progress and provide a foundation for mapping CO2 movement in future surveys, paving the way for commercial carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects at Coal Creek Station. But beneath the scientific objectives lies an equally compelling story of community support and connection.

While the survey itself delves into the depths of geology, the story above ground is one of camaraderie and community. The small town of Underwood has become a home away from home for the 43 Paragon employees involved in the project. Recognizing the influx of workers, the town’s UFS Lodge, a repurposed nursing home, has played a central role. Originally purchased in 2014 and renovated to serve oil field workers during the Bakken Oil Boom, the lodge has once again demonstrated its value as a community asset.

Since the project crew began staying at the UFS Lodge, several upgrades have been made, including remodeling rooms, purchasing new mattresses, and replacing water heaters. Additionally, the increased activity has allowed the lodge to hire two full-time staff members, contributing to the local economy.

Residents have gone above and beyond to make the team feel welcome. For Thanksgiving, local residents donated $200 worth of pies, bringing a taste of home to those far from their families. Meanwhile, project team members staying at the lodge joined the staff to decorate for the holidays, fostering a festive atmosphere that embodies the spirit of the season.
This project is a testament to how remarkable outcomes emerge when groundbreaking work intersects with local support and collaboration. The EERC, Rainbow Energy Center, and Paragon are deeply grateful for the warmth and generosity shown by the residents of Underwood and McLean County. Their hospitality strengthens our commitment to supporting sustainable operations at Coal Creek Station and Falkirk Mine, as well as being a good neighbor and partner to the surrounding community. As we look to the future, this shared effort reminds us that every successful project is grounded in the strength of its community.
